How often should bookkeeping be done?

Bookkeeping should be done monthly at minimum. Weekly is better if you have high transaction volume, multiple bank accounts, or need current financial data to make quick decisions.

Monthly bookkeeping means you close the books by the 15th of the following month. All transactions are entered, accounts are reconciled, and financial statements are ready. This gives you accurate numbers to review each month and keeps you from falling behind.

Weekly bookkeeping works well for restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses with daily sales and cash handling. You catch errors and discrepancies while transactions are still fresh instead of trying to figure out what happened weeks ago.

Waiting longer than a month means errors compound, receipts get lost, and you forget details about transactions. By the time you catch up, your financial statements are outdated and you’re making decisions based on old information.
